Dog bites and animal attacks happen quickly and are usually over in an instant. In that brief time, however, catastrophic injuries could occur. If you or someone you love has recently been injured by a dog bite, you may be entitled to significant compensation for your injuries, pain and suffering. Farr & Bass, Attorneys at Law have over 25 years of experience serving clients throughout Long Island in personal injury and dog bites claims.

Once you contact us we will immediately begin an investigation into your case, making sure that valuable evidence is not lost. It is important to collect witness statements, photograph the scene of the attack, get the name and address of the owner and inquire as to whether the dog was off its leash, has bitten before or has not been socialized.

New York State Law

In order to be successful in a claim for personal injuries sustained by a dog or domestic animal it must be proven that the owner of the animal either knew or should have known of that animal's "vicious propensities." In New York the dangerous or vicious propensity rule is typically proven when an animal has previously bitten another person but the Courts do note that prior bites are not the only evidence of vicious propensities. Other evidence of an animal's vicious propensities may be when a dog has previously bared his teeth or growled. Also potentially relevant is whether the owner chose to restrain the dog, and the manner in which the dog was restrained.

If a pet owner knew (or should have known), based on the animal's prior behavior, that the animal had violent tendencies, that owner may be held liable for any injuries caused by the animal.
